Sundeep,

That's classic. Would have definitely fallen into "Dewey Defeats Truman" territory had they sent it early and it went the other way.

Good timing yes, but given how impossible it was for the P's to win after the 7th, they could have marveled people by sending it sooner :)

Anyone want to be that they have pawned off their email marketing efforts to an intern or someone that knows nothing about segmentation?

The Sports Authority and Dicks do a great job at timing with their emails. When the Super Bowl was over, I received and email from Dicks within 45 minutes......great way to keep them top of mind.

Yea, I sometimes don't get it. Setting up a triggered email is by no means a cake walk, but it should be set up at least as a nightly batch when the collect emails in the store. $10 says they do a manual upload.

Maddy,

Great post - I, too, am a Barenaked Ladies fan! I 100% agree with you on this email - how frustrating to get an email that is one big tease. Having some interactive elements around the faces, as you suggested, or social calls to action ("Connect with the BNL on Facebook") or at a minimum a secondary call to action around tickets: "Find out when BNL is coming to Florida/a venue near you" could give it a hint of relevancy.

To give this email one kudo - they do a nice job of visually making it easy to find and buy tickets for each upcoming show.

@Dylan Thanks for the post, even if you are calling me Andrew. :-) If marketers are sending apology emails for everything (even the most minuscule issues), they'll fall prey to the regular marketing emails. Abuse your recipients by training them that your emails aren't worth reading since the content isn't important enough to interrupt.

Push them away. But, you'll affect the value of apology emails for all emails senders.

@Mitch Are you serious? I suppose you are, unfortunately. Leave it to folks to discover the value of legitimate email and others will jump on it for any incremental lift they can get. If transactional emails weren't protected by CAN-SPAM, that channel would've been infiltrated by marketing only mail a long time ago.
